Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature, part of iOS 14.5, means that apps will now need to ask a user’s permission before they can track them from app to app.
It’s a big deal and one that the likes of Facebook are far from happy about. But it’s great for users, and you’re going to want to take advantage of it.
Doing that is dead easy, too.
Anyone installing new apps will see a pop-up message on first-run, asking for permission to track them. At that point, users can ask the app not to track them, or allow it.
Anyone who already has apps installed and wants to check on them can also do so pretty easily, too.
- Open the Settings app and tap “Privacy” followed by “Tracking.”
- You’ll see a new list of apps that have asked for permission to track you beneath the “Allow Apps to Request to Track” header. You can then revoke permission, or grant it, as needed.
Facebook in particular is very upset about this new privacy feature which ultimately means it’s probably a very good thing for us! Whether apps will ultimately find a way around it, however, remains to be seen.
