The release of iOS 14.5 brought with it some great new features, not least the ability to have your Apple Watch unlock your Face ID-equipped iPhone when you are wearing a mask.
It’s a huge deal when your iPhone can’t scan your face, and it saves you entering long and complicated passcodes and passphrases. And you can use it right now.
You’ll need to make sure that your iPhone is running iOS 14.5 or later and that your Apple Watch is running watchOS 7.4 or later for this to work. An Apple Watch Series 3 or later is required, as is an iPhone with Face ID.
With that all squared away, here’s how to set it all up.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Face ID & Passcode.
Step 2 Enter your passcode and scroll down to the area labeled “Unlock with Apple Watch” and then make sure that the toggle is switched to the On position.
That’s all there is to it. Now, whenever your unlocked Apple Watch is near your iPhone it’ll automatically unlock it when the screen is woken. It’s all pretty sweet, and it saves a huge pain that we’ve been dealing with over the last year. Try it out!
