AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket users got a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich yesterday when an official beta version of it was leaked. Now, to take advantage of all that power that your Skyrocket possesses, the development community has found a way to gain root access. Check out our easy step-by-step guide on how to root the Skyrocket on ICS after the jump!
This guide only works after you have installed the leaked version of Android 4.0.3 for the Skyrocket. All these steps do is install ClockworkMod Recovery and install SuperUser app which will manage root permissions on your device.
DISCLAIMER: As usual, Redmond Pie will not be held responsible for any loss of data, nor if your device gets damaged in the following of this guide. Proceed at your own risk.
Step 1: Download the following files first:
- ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery package [MediaFire]
- ODIN [XDA Thread]
- Superuser 3.0.7 [Official XDA Thread]
Keep the first two files on your PC. Transfer Superuser directly under /sdcard on your Skyrocket.
Step 2: Unzip ODIN’s .zip file using a suitable software and launch it by double-clicking on the .exe file.
Step 3: Shut down your Skyrocket. Now, press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down buttons while simultaneously connecting your device with your PC. When you see a Download Mode screen, leave the buttons.
This is a little tricky, but at least it’s not as tricky as, say, booting into DFU mode on iOS devices.
Step 4: ODIN will detect your device. If it doesn’t, either try Step 3 again or download the latest browsers for your device.
Step 5: Click on PDA and select SkyrocketCWMrecovery.tar (first file you downloaded in Step 1).
Step 6: Click Start.
ClockworkMod Recovery will now be flashed onto your device. Your device will reboot after ODIN is done.
Step 7: Shut down your device once again. Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery by pressing and holding Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. Don’t let go until you get to the main menu!
Step 8: Navigate to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard and select SuperUser 3.0.7 file that you downloaded and transferred to your device in Step 1.
Step 9: Once SuperUser has been flashed, select reboot system now.
If you followed the steps correctly, your Skyrocket will now boot into the same Ice Cream Sandwich ROM as before, but with root access. You may want to install SuperSU for advanced root management. Have fun using root-only apps such as Titanium Backup, ProxyDroid, File Expert and more!
