Manually searching through the Contacts app on an iOS device to find and delete duplicate contacts is probably something a large percentage of us have had to do at one point or another. Thankfully, where there’s problem there’s generally an “app for that“, and this situation is no different, thanks to the extremely useful Cleanup Duplicate Contacts app on the App Store.
The first thing that becomes immediately apparent when using the app is that it’s fast. Seriously fast. After permission has been granted to allow the app to access contacts stored on the device and the Analyze option has been selected, the app whizzes through its initial scan and provides duplicates so fast that it’s difficult to actually see what it’s doing. You tell it to go and it comes back with duplicates and partial duplicates before you can readjust your eyes.
As a powerful contact management solution, this particular app provides a very simple but visually appealing interface that instantly shows the number of contacts on the device, how many contacts would be present after the “Clean” and how many full and partial duplicates it has found.
After reviewing duplicates, it’s as simple as selecting or deselecting the ones to be deleted or merged, and then hitting the relevant option in the navigation bar. It’s so simple it’s pretty much fool-proof and perfect for all types of users.
In addition to analyzing, merging and deleting contacts, Cleanup Duplicate Contacts also introduces a very handy little backup feature for those who may have a little mistrust for apps that purge their data. The backup option requires an account to be created directly through the app and essentially allows the original contacts database to be backed up before making any permanent changes to it based on the outcome of the initial analysis.
Aside from a few little user-interface glitches, this app is an excellent and free solution for those looking to take control of out-of-control address books on iOS.
