Multi-touch is a highly sought-after feature on our touch-based devices at this point in time. Additionally, it seems the larger the screen, the higher the demand, as users look to take advantage of the increased display real estate with as many gestures as possible.
When it comes to Android-based modding and development, there isn’t a more active and knowledgeable place on the web than XDA Developers, and they’ve come through yet again with another gem. Developed by the site’s forum member StupidIdea, Gesture Control offers a great inventory of features – despite still only being in beta stage.
Multi-touch gestures can already be found within several custom launchers – .APK files which allow Android users to change the way their device behaves once the menu button is tapped. Gesture Control is another root-level application, which also installs as an .APK file. Once you have indeed installed it onto your Honeycomb device, you can incorporate even more multi-touch gestures than ever previously possible to perform basic tasks.
Supported gestures, as per the XDA forums, include:
Back:
Swipe 2 fingers from top downwardHome:
pinch 3-4 fingersShow/Hide status bar:
Swipe 2 fingers from bottom upward
Although the list looks a little bare at this moment in time, it’s worth remembering that Gesture Control is still at beta stage, so expect more features (and indeed, more gestures) in future updates. For those interested, you can suggest some commands and gestures you would like to see implemented by heading over to the official thread, linked at the bottom of this post.
In another unfortunate loss for Ice Cream Sandwich, Gesture Control doesn’t appear to be functioning on Android’s latest iteration, but again, the developer has pledged some time to resolving this issue as quickly as possible.
Gesture Control is free of charge, and will require your device to be rooted in order to install. Please head over to the original thread for help, discussion, and suggestions regarding Gesture Control.
