Hopefully you’ll never need it, but the IMEI number of your smartphone is extremely useful should you ever lose it or even worse, have it stolen from you. The long list of unique digits is what identifies your device and differentiates it from any other on the planet, which means it’s the code that your carrier is going to want in order to stop anyone else from using it. That means you’ll want to have it recorded somewhere other than your phone!
If you’re carrying an Android device then getting your IMEI is a piece of cake, because as it turns out, it’s actually recorded by Google and can be retrieved with very little fuss.
Here’s how you can harvest your IMEI with minimal fuss:
Step 1: First, you’ll want to go to google.com/settings and sign in with the Google account that you use your phone with.
Step 2: Scroll down and find the Account tools section and click on Dashboard.
Step 3: Next, expand the Android tab and you’ll see a list of every Android smartphone associated with your account along with, you guessed it, the device’s IMEI number.
Step 4: You’re done!
Now knowing this won’t make you find your phone any quicker and it certainly won’t make the person who stole it develop a conscience, but it does mean that you’ll have the information you need when you report your missing phone,
What we suggest you do right now though, before you actually need it and while you have your phone in your hand, is open the Phone app and type *#06# and if required, hit SEND. The code you get back is your IMEI. Save it somewhere.
We suggest saving your IMEI in Evernote or a text file synced to Dropbox. That way, you’ve always got it at hand. You never know when you’re going to need it.
But hopefully you never will.
