How To Enable Hidden AirTag Developer Mode In Find My App

Apple’s AirTag item tracker has been on sale for a few days now and someone has already managed to find a hidden feature that enables a developer mode, complete with a ton of data on how AirTag location finding is working.

First discovered by Reddit user ‘cyem’ and spotted by MacRumors, the feature can be activated by tapping a user’s name five times in the top-left corner of the screen when using an AirTag to find its location.

That enables a new overlay, complete with information that doesn’t mean a ton to most of us. But it’s definitely there.

My experience of AirTags thus far has been underwhelming – the first one out of the box failed to pair four times in a row when it was sitting on top of the phone. Now that it is finally connected, anything outside of 0.8m/2.6ft away shows as a weak signal and when I can get a signal, there is never an arrow. Funnily enough, I tapped on my name about five times in frustration, and found what appears to be a hidden developer mode. Even more interesting, the arrow appears to actually be working underneath – just not in the normal mode.

The hidden mode isn’t going to be all that useful to the vast majority of people, but it’s always fun to see these things pop up from time to time. We’d expect Apple to remove the five-tap gesture in a future release, too.
