How To Create macOS Sequoia Bootable USB Installer

Here’s how to create macOS Sequoia bootable USB drive installer for your Mac the right way in order to clean install the new version of macOS.

Now that macOS Sequoia is here you’re probably looking to install it on your Mac. Depending on how you plan on going about it, you might need to get your hands on a way to install macOS Sequoia without updating from a previous installation. For that, you’re going to need a new installer USB stick, and here’s how to create one.

The new macOS Sequoia update brings with it a number of new features including support for iPhone mirroring and improved window tiling, and it’s well worth installing.

You won’t get Apple Intelligence support just yet — that’s coming with macOS Sequoia 15.1 in October — but it’s still a notable upgrade.

To create a new installer you’ll need a USB stick with at least 16GB of space on it, so make sure that you have one of those before you get started.

Ready? Here’s how to begin.

First, you’re going to need to download the new macOS installer: Download: macOS 15 Sequoia Final Version For Mac Released.

Step 1: Open a new Terminal window and paste the following command in the Terminal: softwareupdate –list-full-installers

Press Return to select the installer you want to download. In this case, that’s the macOS 15 Sequoia installer.

Step 2: Paste the following command in Terminal. Hit Return afterward and the download will begin: softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version 15.0

Next, we need to create the USB installer.

Step 3: Open the Applications folder and right-click on Install macOS 15 beta followed by selecting Show Package Contents > Open Contents > Resources.

Step 4: In a new or existing Terminal window, type sudo followed by a space.

Step 5: Drag and drop createinstallmedia from the Resources folder into the Terminal window and type  –volume followed by a space.

Step 6: Connect your USB Drive and make sure that everything has been deleted.

Step 7: Open Finder and choose Go followed by Go To Folder.

Step 8: Type /Volumes and hit the Return key to display all of the connected volumes.

Step 9: Drag and drop the USB stick volume to the Terminal window.

Step 10: Press Return to initiate the command and enter your administrator password when prompted to do so.

Step 11: When prompted, type Y and press Return on your keyboard to progress.

The installation process will begin, but hang tight, it could take a while to complete. Once the process is finished you’ll be able to use your new USB stick to install macOS Sequoia at will.
