How To Add A Phone Dialer To OS X Yosemite

With the Handoff feature now live for everyone to take advantage of, and having integrated iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, users have really taken a liking to what may be one of the hottest features Apple has thrown at users in a while.

For a feature that has been designed with convenience in mind, the process of getting from point A to point B to dial a call from your Mac is not convenient at all. Continuity Keypad offers what should have come packaged with the OS X Yosemite update itself – a simple, bold, in-your-face phone dialer.

Continuity Keypad is basically a frontline GUI that lets you dial cellular calls from your Mac without having to go through a tedious process. Presently, users on OS X Yosemite have to search up for a contact to dial a call. For some users however, nothing can beat the good ol’ fashioned way of punching in numbers on a dial-pad for making a call, and the Continuity Keypad provides just that experience.

Using the app is no rocket science, with its fairly limited, but well focused function. Punch in the numbers using your keyboard, or if you prefer, clicking the numbers using your mouse, will do it as well. Entering in the numbers, you will be assured with the sound of dial-tones, and when you’re ready, hit the green dial button to place your call.

The app does offer the ability to search up for contacts as well, and the addition of adding a new one straight from the app – like you would on your phone – is indeed a welcome feature. The app, is still a beta version for now, and a re-designed version has been sent to Apple for approval for being published on the Mac App Store. The dial-pad resembled iOS 8’s existing keypad which would have been a definite concern for Apple, let alone the use of Continuity as a third-party brand, may not bode well with Apple.

To make the overall magic happen, both your iPhone and Mac must be signed into the same Apple ID. And having iOS 8 / 8.1 installed on your iPhone is a strict requirement.

The app is available as a beta download for those on OS X Yosemite. It is expected to be available on the Mac App Store for $0.99, should you wish to keep it in the longer run.
