Those of us carrying Apple hardware around with us, be that a smartwatch, a smartphone, a tablet or a notebook tend to have a few things in common. One of those things is a keen eye for design, whether that be for actually doing it or just appreciating it when design is done well. The latter is much easier than the former, that’s for sure.
So when design goes awry it tends to irk us more than most, and as with most things in design, once you see something even just a little off, you can never un-see it.
That’s exactly what happened to iMore’s Rene Ritchie when he spied a ‘Qualcomm 4G’ sticker slapped on the bottom of a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. It wasn’t the sticker that stood out to him most though – but really, who puts a sticker on the buttom edge of a phone? – it was the fact that nothing alongside it seemed to line up properly.
To illustrate his point, Ritchie took some photographs of the offending phone and drew some lines to show the center point of the various holes and ports that run along the bottom of the handset. Once you see how none of them line up, it’s going to drive you a little more mad each time you look.
It’s not just the bottom of the phone either. The same poor attention to design detail flows throughout the device, with Ritchie correct in his assertion that “almost nothing is aligned.” In fact it almost becomes comical to the point that Samsung must have almost gone out of its way to make sure nothing lines up properly.
Fortunately the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are both very good phones indeed, and overlooking the alignment issues they both look absolutely stunning to our eyes too. But it’s the lack of attention to detail that once again lets Samsung down in an area where it has come on in leaps and bounds this past 12 months. Finally using metal and glass to produce its flagship handsets and kicking the flimsy plastic to the curb was long overdue, and now Samsung just needs to go that little but further before it can call the job done.
Let us hope someone at Samsung gets a ruler out before designing the Galaxy S7, yeah?
