Mobile gaming has evolved in leaps and bounds over the past five or so years, and although our smartphones and tablets now offer vast libraries of titles on a scale surpassing any other platform, the likes of iOS and Android still struggle to shake off the "casual" gaming tag thanks to the high volumes of simple-yet-addictive pick-up, put-down offerings.
While graphics and gameplay on an iPhone or Galaxy Tab are also improving at unprecedented rates, the hardcore gamer is yet to be displaced from the PC, but a little trick documented over at Reddit suggests one can enjoy the best of both worlds.
The method, which allows you to stream your PC game through to your mobile device to be played (as crudely described on Reddit) – on the toilet – is fairly simple, and providing your game can run at 800 x 600 resolution, you can enjoy the likes of Skyrim or Diablo 3 whilst sitting anywhere within your local network.
You’ll need a wireless controller (if you have an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, then you can hook one of those up), and since you will wind up holding a game pad as opposed to your device, you’ll also need some way of mounting your mobile device. The Reddit method suggests using a lamp, with rubber bands keeping the device in place, although there are many other household items you could use to keep everything in place.
It requires Splashtop’s market-leading remote desktop software, but once everything is configured and the correct optimization settings are in place, you’ll be no doubt surprised by how nicely the games play. The full illustrated tutorial, which you can find here, shows games running on an iPhone, although since the same app is also available for Android, you can also use your Galaxy S III or One X to play your favorite game while lying in bed.
Probably not healthy if you find yourself unable to take a break from your PC gaming sessions, it’s certainly a nice bit of geek intuition, and although few will play via the small screen for a prolonged amount of time, it’s a great option to have in the locker.
