Here’s How iPhone 14’s Always-On Display Will Work

Apple is strongly rumored to be bringing an always-on display to its iPhone 14 lineup this fall and now the latest iOS 16 information appears to have outed exactly how that will work.

Apple’s iOS 16 already adds support for a new Lock Screen and customizable widgets, but the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are set to allow people to have their Lock Screen appear as always on, giving them instant access to those widgets as well as the date and time.

Now, 9to5Mac has been able to dig into iOS 16 to see exactly how the always-on display will work.

According to the site’s report, Apple will have iPhone 14 devices behave similarly to Apple Watch — that is, the display will dim when not being used, saving power while still offering up glanceable information. It’s likely that the iPhones will also reduce their displays’ refresh rate to save on energy, too.

Basically, it seems that Apple will replicate the same effect from the Apple Watch on the iPhone 14 Pro. This means that users will still see their wallpapers in some way even when the screen is turned off. The wallpaper will be displayed at full brightness once the user taps the screen or presses the Power button.

Apple is expected to announce four new iPhones in or around September, with only the Pro models getting this new always-on screen. Those same devices are the only ones that are expected to benefit from a new chip, likely the A16, too.
