Gurman: A New iOS 16 Lock Screen, Improved iPadOS Multitasking, And More Coming At WWDC 2022

Apple is set to host its WWDC opening keynote online next week and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that we could be in for a bumper list of new features across multiple platforms.

New iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13 updates are likely to be outed for the first time, all bringing noteworthy improvements.

Writing in his weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is readying a new lock screen update as part of iOS 16, adding a new feature that will bring “wallpapers that have widget-like capabilities” to the platform. It’s also thought that a new always-on component will be available to those who buy the iPhone 14 Pro models when they are announced later this year.

Apple is planning major enhancements for the Lock Screen, including wallpapers that have widget-like capabilities.

Further, I’m told iOS 16 builds in future support for an always-on lock screen, something Apple was originally planning for last year’s iPhone 13.

In terms of iPadOS 16, Gurman also adds further fuel to the fire regarding a new iPad multitasking interface, with the suggestion that a windowed approach could be coming to the tablet. We’ve seen previous information pointing in that direction after developer Steve Troughton-Smith discovered references to windowing in Apple’s web browsing framework.

Over on the Mac, Gurman expects a redesigned Settings app to function more similarly to the iOS version, while watchOS 9 is set to get “significant” updates this time around.

Apple’s WWDC opening keynote will stream online on June 6 and developer betas of these new updates will likely be made available on the same day. The updates should ship to the public in or around September.
