During the course of the past few years, the gaming industry’s sales charts have been dominated by Activision’s Call of Duty franchise, but last year, things changed. Not only did Grand Theft Auto 5 blow CoD: Ghosts out of the water, but its monumental success saw it break several Guinness World Records, and even though Rockstar Games’ most celebrated release is now effectively done and dusted, there’s still the small matter of the next-gen release. In retailing the original GTA 5 just two months before the arrival of the PS4 and Xbox One, Rockstar knew that it could further monetize with an up-scaled version for the newer consoles as well as the PC, and while the official announcements of these upcoming editions have just been made, we may now also have a firm date.
From what we’ve seen, GTA 5 for PC, Xbox One and PS4 will be a lot more than a better-looking repeat of what we’ve already seen. In fact, even those who’ve already completed the title on their current set-up will likely want to get involved with a significantly-enhanced release that will "take full advantage" of the additional power offered by the PC and newer consoles, and after Prima Games’ insight last week into the stunning visuals we can expect next time around, an online retailer may have spilled on the release date.
Of course, given the sequence of events that occurred last year with the original release, we’re not taking Coolshop’s November 14th suggestion with anything more than a pinch of salt. It’s not that we don’t consider the date as a reliable one, but given how we expected GTA 5 to release in spring – only for Rockstar to push things back to September – we cannot allow ourselves to get too excited about anything so early on in the day.
Rockstar has already noted that the improved version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will launch this fall, and if it does launch in November, then it’ll give holiday shoppers ample time to sort themselves out in time for the festive period. However, given the nature of last year’s major delays, we’re not reaching for the confetti just yet, and as ever, we’ll keep you posted on any updates on this title as and when they arrive.
