As soon as 3D gaming came to Rockstar's pride and joy with Grand Theft Auto III, the game - if you'll pardon the pun - was changed forever. Since then, GTA has spawned more knockoffs than a Gucci purse, but soon iOS and Android users will be able to play the real thing, right on their smartphones and tablets.

Well, when we say smartphones and tablets, what we really mean, is some smartphones and tablets.

As you might expect, making a real console game run on a mobile device needs a fair bit of power - power which is only afforded by a nice, meaty dual-core CPU. That means, on the iOS side, you're looking at needing an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 if you fancy a spot of drive-by action.

Android fans have more choice, as always, with their selection of hardware going something like this: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2, Acer Iconia Tab (100, 500, 501), Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

As you might expect, more dual-core devices will be added to the list of compatible hardware as and when they are made available. If you're on the iOS side of things though, you're pretty much stuck with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 until the iPad 3 comes around early next year.

As if the game wasn't enough to get your juices flowing, there's also an action figure on the horizon, for those of us that never really took to Action Man.

Supposedly a limited edition, the figure is supposed to be of the main man in GTA3, Claude, and comes complete with two sets of clothes, a selection of guns and some replaceable hands. All the usual fare, really.

There are currently no details for a price or release date when it comes to the games, but the action figure will set you back a cool $150.

Wow.

You can’t really be a geek and not have played one of the super-popular and mega-successful Grand Theft Auto games. Even back in the day when the title brought top-down action and a spot of attitude to the table, the Grand Theft Auto franchise was one revered by fans.
