All the talk amongst gamers right now may be of what Sony has up its sleeve for the PlayStation 4 release later this year, but that doesn’t mean that fans of the Gran Turismo franchise have nothing else to look forward to.

With the PlayStation 4 being released in under three months, Sony today officially announced that while a Gran Turismo game is in the works, gamers will also be able to watch a GT-themed movie, although there is no word yet that suggests when the movie will be available. In short, there’s no concrete date for it, but the existence of the movie has been confirmed for good.

Set to be a full length feature, the Gran Turismo movie is being created by Polyphony head Kazunori Yamauchi alongside filmmakers Mike de Luca and Dana Brunetti. Gran Turismo 6 is set to land on December 6th on the PlayStation 3, but there is no confirmation as yet that the game will be released alongside this very secretive movie.

Sony today announced the existence of the movie during its Gamescom 2013 event and while the company is offering very few details about what the Gran Turismo movie may entail, we’re sure gamers will be suitably excited even with the very few details that we currently have to hand.

It was back in July of this year when we first heard the rumor of the Gran Turismo movie, but at that time it wasn’t clear who was working on it and details were rather scarce. With a Need for Speed movie also in the works, it was a matter of time when Sony actually did something about it. And here’s the answer!

Grand Turismo is one of the most popular driving simulation games on the planet, and Sony will be hoping that the feature length movie will tap into the same enthusiastic market as the Gran Turismo games to. With no details announced as to what the movie will include, except the news that fast cars will be on show, we’re all currently left to make our own minds up about what format the finished article will be in. Given the rather spotty history that gaming has with movie tie-ins though, we won’t be getting too excited until we know a little bit more about what Sony has in store.

And with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One just around the corner, the Gran Turismo movie can take something of a back seat for now!
