Google is heavily rumored to have a foldable Android phone in the works, with some people going with the Pixel Fold name when talking about it. Whatever it ends up being called, a new report claims that it will make use of ultra-thin glass (UTG) from Samsung when it ships — and it’s reportedly on course to do that before the end of the year.
According to a report by The Elec, Google is just one of many companies looking to use Samsung as a supplier for UTG.
Xiaomi, Honor, and OPPO are some other names mentioned and with Samsung being the only place that can provide UTG, it’s presumably able to set its price accordingly.
The Elec claims that Google is “preparing a 7.6-inch in-folding foldable smartphone.” while Oppo is thought to have a foldable with a 7.1-inch screen coming in 2022.
Foldable phones continue to be something many manufacturers are looking into, while Apple is also said to be looking into a foldable device of its own. Apple already uses Samsung for its other displays and could presumably also strike a deal for foldable glass from the company, too.
Apple’s foldable is thought to be quite a way from being ready for prime time, but Google is set to get its folding Pixel out the door within months. Foldable Android devices already exist of course, but Google’s will be the first that offers a pure Android experience.
