Google is planning to use its October 4th event to presumably reveal all about the highly-anticipated Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, but in true online fashion, it seems that UK store Carphone Warehouse has beaten it to the punch with a fairly extensive information leak.
The Google event will undoubtedly provide the granular, in-depth information that potential Pixel owners will want to see and hear, but for now, the Carphone Warehouse leak gives us an insight into the two devices by showing off a number of product shots and renders.
The images may have since been pulled from the webpage, but as you can see, it was too late. The images not only show two new smartphones from Google, but also includes the “Introducing Pixel. Phone by Google” tagline that seems to be part of the advertising strategy for the hardware. There’s also a “Meet Pixel” banner type image that shows the rear of the Pixel hardware with the accompanying text “The power of Google at your fingertips. Every touch, every interaction, every moment – made easy. Available in 2 sizes.” This text seems to suggest that we can expect a similar spec for each device, but just available in different sizes.
One of the leaked images also seems to show off a new app interface that makes heavy use of Google Assistant. Pixel and Pixel XL owners will be able to say ‘OK Google’ to start the process, which then involves providing voice commands.
And of course, like most apps that make use of digital assistants, the information suggests that the more the app and feature is used, the better it gets, essentially becoming “your own personal Google” which is “always ready to help.” There’s also a reference to the new Smart Storage functionality that helps to free up space on the device by moving high resolution photos to Google Photos.
Specification wise, the provided info seems to suggest a Full HD display for the 5-inch Pixel while the 5.5-inch Pixel XL will be getting a Quad HD display.
The two phones should be available in 32GB and 128GB offering, and will be powered by Snapdragon 821 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. The hardware will also ship running the latest Android 7.1 operating system. A lot of this information matches previous rumors that we’ve been privy to, but it’ll be interesting to see the full reveal by Google come October 4.
