Google is said to be launching its first foldable Pixel phone as soon as this year. This comes amid rumors that Apple is testing its own foldable iPhone, although that won’t be ready to launch for a couple of years at least.
According to a new report by TheElec, Samsung is said to be working on a foldable OLED for use in Google phone as well as others by Oppo and Xiaomi.
While the last two companies are said to be aiming for a screen around the 6.38-inch size, Google’s device will be noticeably larger. All devices will fold inwards, too.
Google, meanwhile, has requested Samsung Display develop a foldable OLED panel around 7.6-inch in size.
Little else is known about the work Google is doing beyond the fact that the device will make use of a Samsung display. The timescale of devices arriving this year could be a little tight however, with this being the first time we’ve heard concrete claims that this is is something in the cards.
If Google is entering the foldable world it might cause Apple to bring plans for its own foldable further forward, something we can all agree that we’re in for. If Google really is launching a foldable Pixel this year we’re sure to start hearing more about it soon.
