Google Releases New Android N Update, Here Are The Details

Google has flipped the switch and released a new Android N preview update. Considering the fact that first Android N preview build was only officially announced and released about seven days ago, it is kind of surprising that there’s already a new update making its way to devices. Google is expected to continually progress Android N over the remainder of this year based on testing and user feedback.

In addition to the over-the-air update making its way to compatible devices, Google has also updated the factory images of the Android N experience to suit the needs of those who prefer installing firmware the old-fashioned way. The associated build number of the new Android N version deviates slightly depending on the device that it’s intended for. The Nexus 5X and 6P have build number NPC56W. NPC56X belongs to the Nexus 9, and NPC56R is associated with the Nexus Player. The Pixel C and Nexus 6 for whatever reason will have to sit this one out for the moment.

The OTA update itself requires a download of around the ~30MB mark depending on the device that it’s actually being downloaded and installed to. Both, those who are enrolled into Android Beta Program and those who chosed to install the initial build by flashing the image, should be able to get the OTA update for the new NPC56 build.

At this early stage, and given the fact that it’s the first release since the initial preview, there isn’t a huge set of changes and feature upgrades bundled within, with performance improvement being the primary focus. The relatively small file and install size of the firmware update also suggests that Google hasn’t bundled anything big into this incremental update.

If you already have Android N installed on your device, simply head to Settings > About phone > System updates on the device to grab the latest update.

If this is the first time you are installing Android N, the best way to go about this is to install it via Android Beta Program. You can find our guide on how to go about it here: How To Install Android N Preview OTA Update Via Android Beta Program [The Easy Way].
