Ingress, Google’s intriguing augmented reality title for Android, has just made its début on the iTunes App Store, allowing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to get a piece of the action. It’s free of charge, and below, we’ve got the details and download link so be sure to join us right after the break!
Ingress has been in the works for a couple of years now, and having been teased by the search giant in the past, finally made its way to the Play Store back in December of last year. Even though Apple is a major rival, though, Google recognizes that a large part of the mobile community is tethered to iOS, and since not all iPhone and iPad users are entirely adverse to using Google products, releasing Ingress on the App Store seems a very worthwhile pursuit.
Given that Ingress toys with the idea of augmented reality, it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that it’s incredibly geeky — just the way we like it. Essentially, you join either the Resistance or Enlightened teams, with the overall goal being to rescue the Exotic Matter. But while this capture-the-flag format isn’t anything new in the gaming world, it is quite unusual to find it in the real world.
For, yes, the Exotic Matter is hidden in places found in the real world, with various landmarks and public places obscuring this elusive, coveted prize. Thus, players need to travel around in order to make significant progress, and although this quite the departure from lying down on the sofa and playing Candy Crush, it’s an interesting take on modern gaming that many iOS users will be eager to try out.
Just like Foursquare turned real life into a bit of a game, Ingress attempts something similar, but from a completely different angle. On your travels, you can find all kinds of different objects and such that will help you and your team make progress in the game, and if you like working as part of a team, then you’ll surely lose yourself in Ingress.
