Every year, Google comes through a new Nexus smartphone, and although LG is ordinarily tasked with building side of things, it’s reckoned that Motorola will be at the helm for this year’s edition. Given that we had the Nexus 4, then the current flagship Nexus 5, it was naturally presumed that the Big G would take the wraps off the Nexus 6 later on this year, but as per a new report, it may well be given the ‘Nexus X’ moniker.
The reason behind the name-change, continues PhoneArena, is because Google doesn’t want to encounter any trademark issues. The Philip K. Dick novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’, which later spawned the Blade Runner movie, features Nexus-6 androids, and rather than tread on anybody’s toes, the report suggests that Google will go a slightly different way with the naming.
To be honest, though, consumers will not be too fussed by this slight adjustment, particularly given the device’s list of purported specs. According to reports, we’re looking at a 5.9-inch QHD display, placing it firmly in phablet territory, and with a 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 to keep things ticking over, it’ll be plenty powerful enough.
The rear-facing camera will apparently be a 13-megapixel affair, and if it manages to remain at the same price point as the Nexus 5 can currently be found on the Play Store, then we’re in for a real treat.
The Nexus X, should that turn out to be its name, may well be the last Nexus handset we see from Google, with the company apparently set to ditch the line-up in favor of Google Play Editions of handsets released by other vendors. But even though we do love the fact that devices like the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 can be snapped up sans all of the additional bloat ware, we do very much hope that the Nexus X is not the last.
After all, the Nexus 5 offers a nice, high-end experience for half the price of those aforementioned flagships, and with the build quality having improved significantly, looking out for each year’s new Nexus has become something of an institution among smartphone enthusiasts.
Will you be grabbing the Nexus X based on the current specs?
