Google Maps users now have a new feature to look forward to when they’re driving after the app received an update that added support for a live speedometer.
The new feature, which works both on the iPhone and via the Apple CarPlay interface, allows people to see a live speedometer as they drive.
The feature was already available on Android and is designed to help people understand their actual speed and stay within local speed limits. However, Google tells TechCrunch that the feature is designed to be used for “informational use only” and that they should continue to use their vehicle’s built-in speedometer to confirm the actual speed.
The Google Maps app not only shows the current speed but also turns the icon red when the indicator speed matches or exceeds the speed limit of the road that is being driven on at the time.
Don’t currently see the live speedometer feature on your own iPhone? You can enable the speedometer and speed limit notifications by navigating to their profile, Settings, Navigation, and then Driving options.
Google says that the new feature is rolling out to people around the world right now but it might take a little while before it arrives on your own device. Make sure you’re using the latest version of the Google Maps app available via the App Store, too.
