Google Maps has announced that it is adding new support for Live Activities on iPhones, bringing turn-by-turn navigations tot he Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The new integration will allow people to see real-time ETA and directions in the Dynamic Island as well as on the Lock Screen of Apple’s best iPhones.
With glanceable directions, you can track your journey right from your route overview or lock screen. You’ll see updated ETAs and where to make your next turn — information that was previously only visible by unlocking your phone, opening the app and using comprehensive navigation mode.
These glanceable directions start rolling out globally on Android and iOS in the coming months, and will also be compatible with Live Activities on iOS 16.1.
Google says that glanceable directions are coming to iPhones and Android phones “in the coming months” so keep your eyes peeled. The feature will ensure that people no longer have to open the Google Maps app to get real-time information on where they need to make a turn next.
Live Activities were added to iOS 16.1 and are best used on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. That’s because they have the Dynamic Island to display content while using other apps, while the always-on display also ensures that information can be seen at all times.
Interestingly, Google hasn’t shared any screenshots of what we can expect its Maps Live Activities to look like but they’re likely to be similar to the ones already available via Apple’s own Maps app.
