The I/O developer conference is Google’s annual gathering to catch up with the wider audience invested in its various platforms. It’s also an opportunity for the Big G to showcase some new products and innovations, with a number of major announcements usually taking place at this time. Precisely what will be on show at this year’s I/O is a matter of speculation, but the Android maker has dished out a little confirmation by announcing the date for registration as well as the event itself.
Those interested in attending will need to mark March 17th in their diaries, since at 9am on that very day, registrations will commence. And just like last year, Google is implementing a lottery based system where applicants will be selected randomly after which they’ll be able to purchase a ticket. The event itself will begin on May 28th, running through to the 29th, and will take place in San Francisco. For those not planning to embark upon San Fran, I/O 2015 will also be streamed live, presumably across most devices.
The website for I/O is very much remnant of the company’s Material Design, a revamping of the Android UI that is trickling across apps, Web interfaces, and the entire Google ecosystem. Where last year was focused on a number of categories, including Android Wear and Glass, we don’t yet know what’s on the menu this time around, and in what has been, by Google’s standards, a pretty quiet few months since I/O 2014, the tech world will be eager to learn of what’s new.
After generating so much hype during its early stages, the excitement about Glass has certainly petered out, and Microsoft’s announcement of the head-mounted HoloLens a short while ago has certainly helped to rain on the parade of the search giant’s own efforts.
With registrations a little over a month away, more clues will likely begin to crop up soon, and we’re looking very much forward to hearing about what’s in store. Google does, after all, have a lot going on behind the scenes thanks to its sizeable research team, and with recent rumors suggesting that an Uber-incarnate is nigh, techies worldwide will no doubt be transfixed to the live stream.
We’ll keep you posted on any further updates relating to Google and I/O, and will also throw out a reminder for those registrations on 3/17, so stay tuned to our coverage here.
