Google Chrome On iPhone Can Now Add Web Apps To Home Screen

Google has released a new update for its Chrome iPhone app, adding support for the ability to add web apps to the device’s Home Screen.

The new update, which is available for download from the App Store now, is required for this new feature to work.

But that isn’t the only requirement — you’ll also need to have iOS 16.4 or later installed with that being the update that adds support for third-party web browsers to save websites to the Home screen.

Those who have the Google Chrome app installed with automatic updates enabled may well already have the new version installed. Everyone else can install it manually. The release notes add that users “can now add URLs or Progressive Web Apps to your home screen.”

Adding a web app to the iPhone’s Home Screen is a great way to maintain quick and easy access to a website or service that doesn’t have its own iPhone app. That isn’t something that crops up all that often now, however.

Apple’s adding a new feature similar to this to the Safari app that is part of macOS Sonoma. That update isn’t going to be released to the public until later this fall, but it’s already available to developers as well as those who are on the public beta program.
