Google has today announced the Pixel Fold after months upon months of leaks. Now, the phone is official and it turns out that all of the leaks were true — including the fact that you’ll get a free Pixel Watch with every order.
Google announced its first foldable during the Google I/O developer event today, 10 May.
The phone will cost $1799 when it goes on sale, with June 27 being the big day. Two colors will be offered with Porcelain (white) and Obsidian (black) being the options.
As for the specs, everything looks good. a 5.8-inch external display will be joined by a 7.6-inch internal one. Both are 120Hz affairs which means that you’ll enjoy buttery-smooth scrolling and animations no matter which you use.
Google says that the Pixel Fold is the thinnest foldable phone in the markets that it’s being sold in which at launch will be the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. In terms of figures, the Pixel Fold is 5.8mm thin compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4’s 6.3mm. When closed, the Pixel Fold is almost 4mm thinner, which is impressive.
On the inside, there’s a Google Tensor G2 chip, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage while a 512GB option will also be offered. The primary camera is a 48-megapixel one while a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide will be joined by a 10-megapixel 5x telephoto. The front-facing camera is a 9.5-megapixel affair. The camera above the internal display is an 8-megapixel one.
All of this makes for an impressive package despite the price — and even that isn’t all that high compared to other foldable. We’ll reserve judgment until we’ve handled one for ourselves, though.
