Following rumors that Google has canceled the Pixel 5a 5G for this year, the Mountain View-based company has come out to announce that the phone will indeed be released this year.
The rumors were fueled by the continuing silicon shortage that has seen a number of consumer electronics being impacted, such as the iPhone, and if you’re into PCs, GPUs as well. In a tweet that’s hardly a day old, Jon Prosser said:
Bad news. “Barbet” (Pixel 5A) has been canceled. I’m told it’s due to the chip shortage, and as of this morning, it’s not moving forward. Pixel 4A and 4A 5G will continue to be sold throughout 2021.
This rumor was further confirmed by Android Central as well, but as mentioned earlier, Google was quick to react with a spokesperson releasing a statement to 9to5Google, confirming that the phone will in fact be released as planned.
Pixel 5a 5G is not cancelled. It will be available later this year in the U.S. and Japan and announced in line with when last year’s a-series phone was introduced.
The fact that Google plans on releasing the new phone in Japan and US only, could mean that production may not be impacted by the silicon shortage.
