Fans of the original PlayStation 1 console, or PSX as it was known at the time, have a new way to play the classic console’s ROMs after a new emulator arrived on the App Store.
The app, which is available for both the iPad and iPhone, and is a free download with no in-app purchases in order to meet Apple’s App Store rules.
The Gamma app supports cloud syncing for downloading PSX games to the device while saves are also handled via the same process.
Game artwork is downloaded over the internet, too. Gamers will of course need to have access to the ROM files required to play a game, although you won’t also need to have the BIOS files to hand, unlike some other emulators.
The app itself supports touchscreen controls with the buttons customizable should that be your jam. Bluetooth controllers and keyboards are also listed as being supported, offering more flexibility for those who would rather not use the on-screen controls.
However, early App Store reviews suggest that there are issues with some game controllers and one reviewer says that the app crashes entirely when using the popular Backbone One controller, which could be a real issue for a ton of people. Hopefully that kind of but is fixed sooner rather than later, though.
