Talk of a potential release for N.O.V.A 3 began pretty much as soon as the second installment hit smartphones and tablets, but there has been little in the way of concrete news regarding the hotly anticipated shooter.
Expected to feature the Unreal Engine and again being set around the same lead protagonist as the earlier games, N.O.V.A 3 is believed to be on target for a release on both iOS and Android platforms towards the end of this year. There isn’t much news floating around other than that, but that hasn’t stopped developer Gameloft from releasing the game’s first teaser trailer.
The forty-eight second trailer shows lead character Kal Wardin apparently crash-landing on Earth when aiming for San Francisco. Not much is given away by the short teaser, though new artwork being used by Gameloft does have a distinct Crysis feel to it, possibly trading off the popularity of the Crysis franchise and the news that a new game is on the way, too. Clever work by Gameloft, or are we being a tad too cynical?
The original N.O.V.A game, or Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, was released for Apple’s iOS platform of devices back in 2009. Palm’s webOS also got a port, though that was obviously not quite as popular as the iOS version. A later PlayStation mini release came, too, and a follow-up game was almost an inevitability.
The second installment saw a release twelve months later, again with iOS being the lead platform. The BlackBerry PlayBook and HP TouchPad were also added to the mix, and with an Android version of N.O.V.A 3 being made available, just about everyone will soon have had access to one of the three games.
Gameloft may have been a little stingy with the details so far, but the company has promised to release more information over the coming days. It’s media manipulation 101 – release a little bit of information regularly, and let the press fill in the gaps, that way you keep the headlines flowing.
We can’t wait to see more of N.O.V.A 3, especially on a Retina Display equipped iPad. That sounds like a match made in heaven to us, and we suspect the guys and gals at Gameloft agree.
