Game Of Thrones S07E04 Torrent Leaks Online Days After HBO Hack

Latest Game of Thrones (GoT) episode S07E04 torrent titled The Spoils of War leaks online onto the Internet. Here are the details.

It’s very difficult for companies to instantly recover and gain composure after a large-scale data breach, as HBO is currently finding out to its detriment. We recently brought you the news that HBO’s servers had been compromised with approximately 1.5TB of data being stolen, including the scripts and storyboards pertaining to the upcoming “The Spoils of War” season 7 episode. Things have now gone one step further with that drama with a low-quality copy of that full episode now surfacing online for all to see ahead of the episode airing on Sunday.

HBO has been extremely busy issuing a high number of DCMA cease and desist notices to try and get as much of the stolen content offline as possible. It initially looked as though those issuings were working as GoT fans had only been able to see a script from April 2016 as well as a homemade storyboard video leaked to YouTube. However, things have taken a slightly more dramatic turn today, with various Google Drive links being shared via Reddit as well as on Torrent trackers which essentially give everyone with an internet connection early access to the full episode.

The interesting thing here is that the distributed low-quality video wasn’t actually obtained through the recent successful hacking of HBO’s servers, but is said to have actually come from one of HBO’s distribution partners. It’s not entirely difficult to ascertain which distribution partner is responsible for the video considering the Star India logo is watermarked across the video file which is appearing as part of the links shared through social media.

Interestingly enough, although the HBO hackers managed to obtain a reported 1.5 terabytes of data from HBO’s servers it would seem that they didn’t actually manage to get any full episodes of Games of Thrones which could significantly spoil the current storyline for hardcore fans. With that said, it’s difficult to mitigate against leaks such as this one which has come from distribution partners. It’s great news that the full episode, or any episode for that matter, wasn’t obtained as part of the HBO hack but it’s still a huge headache for HBO when you take into consideration the company now needs to start an investigation into how this has happened with a trusted partner such as Star India.
