Samsung may have announced the Galaxy S5 back in February, but the release of the device later on next week is only the first part of the story. Along with the recent specs leak of the Galaxy S5 mini, we now have what appears to be a legitimate glimpse of the Galaxy S5 Zoom, an upgrade on last year’s Galaxy S4 Zoom designed specifically for photography aficionados.
The culture of releasing several spin-off devices alongside a flagship is nothing new at all, and if anything, Samsung should be credited with starting the trend. As well as the Galaxy S4 Zoom and Galaxy S4 mini, the Korean outfit also released the Galaxy S4 Active last year, but given how its main appeal was its ruggedized nature (dust and waterproofing), one suspects that Samsung may well skip this option this time around, particularly given that the main Galaxy S5 doesn’t leak water.
Still, if you’re a part of the growing number of snap-happy smartphone users and are on the hunt for a device that caters to your needs, then the Galaxy S5 Zoom may well have you covered. The leaked photo of the device, which only shows the back side of the handset, indicates that like most camera-focused devices, the rear-facing lens is the real show-piece in terms of the design. It’s larger than what you’d normally expect of a smartphone camera lens, but given the fairly solid performance of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, its size should be backed up by its output.
From what’s been said during the past couple of weeks, the Galaxy S5 Zoom will pack a 4.8-inch 720p HD AMOLED display, a 20.1-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper. The smartphone may be powered by a modest, 1.3 GHz hexa-core Samsung Exynos Hexa processor, with the kicker of 2 gigs of on-board RAM.
Additionally, it may include a microSD slot (which you’ll probably need for all those high-quality photos and videos), and like the main Galaxy S5, should run on the latest 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box.
Given that the real Galaxy S5 offers a very solid 16-megapixel camera with 4K video shooting, though, the Zoom is unlikely to offer enough of an improvement if you’ve already got your eyes on the flagship, although we’ll still reserve definitive judgements until this device has been officially announced.
