While the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL may have cause to disagree, we’d suggest that the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are still the biggest stories in town, if only because they’re the phones that everything will be compared with over the next 11 months. That’s very much the case here, although in this situation, it’s to put the iPhone XS Max firmly under the microscope.
Youtuber PhoneBuff took an iPhone XS Max and pitted it against a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in order to see which would win when being subjected to a battery torture test.
This being PhoneBuff, the test was aimed at trying to accurately represent how both devices would be used in the real world, which means the test comprised various things such as an hour-long phone call, an hour of email browsing and all other kinds of wonderful things that we all do with our phones during the average day. Just to make things as accurate as possible, a robotic arm was used to make sure that the test was fair. During the test, display brightness and audio volume were both set identically across both devices, and we’d suggest checking the full video out to see how things went down.
The TL;DR of it all? Well, the iPhone XS Max didn’t do great and the Galaxy Note 9 was the clear winner by some considerable margin. This is perhaps to be expected to some extent given the difference in battery capacity, however, with the iPhone’s battery sitting at 3174mAh and the Galaxy Note 9 boasting a 4000mAh capacity. The test also doesn’t cater for intermittent idle time, which is likely to take up most of a smartphone’s daily routine.
Still, the way the iPhone’s battery just seemed to disappear makes for an interesting watch regardless.
