Amid ongoing rumors that Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will gain a new always-on display this year, more evidence to back that up has been shared online.
An always-on display would allow Pro iPhones to show some information even when the screen is turned off.
It’s a feature that would keep the clock and iOS 16 widgets available even when the iPhone isn’t being used, and it’s something some Android phones have offered for a decade. Now, it looks like Apple is bringing the same feature to its most advanced iPhones this fall, with its own developer tool almost confirming it.
New information shared by iOS developer @rhogelleim shows that the SwiftUI preview, part of Apple’s developer tools, now has a new behavior that appears to show an always-on display. The behavior takes place when developers simulate an iPhone’s display being turned off, with a newly-dimmed Lock Screen appearing.
That’s exactly what we expect from an always-on display and it appears to be further confirmation that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will gain the feature when they are announced this fall. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max won’t benefit from the same feature thanks to a difference in display technology.
The Pro models will be capable of a refresh rate as low as 1Hz, allowing an always-on display to use less power.
If all goes according to plan we expect Apple to announce the new iPhones this September, with new Apple Watches also in the cards.
