When Apple released the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro the ones sold in the United States didn’t come with a SIM card tray. That means that they don’t take physical SIM cards anymore and instead use only eSIMs. Now, it sounds like the French iPhone 15 might follow suit.
When Apple said it was going eSIM-only in the United States it was always going to be a matter of time before the rest of the world followed suit.
A report by French website, MacGeneration, suggests that the iPhone 15 will only support eSIMs in the country.
MacGeneration, via machine translation:
Since the transition obviously went without major problems, the manufacturer could quickly extend it to other countries. According to our information, the future iPhone 15 and 15 Pro could also be released without a physical SIM card in France.
What that means for other countries in Europe remains to be seen, but multiple countries do use the same iPhone that is sold in France so it’s possible that we could see other countries also ditch the plastic SIM card later in 2023.
The eSIM is seen as a more secure way for people to connect to their cellular data and phone service, with the ability to run up to eight eSIMs also offering more flexibility than can be possible when using physical ones.
Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone lineup this September.
