Fortnite Gets 60 FPS Support On iPhone XS, XS Max, XR Ahead Of Nintendo Switch, Android Phones

If you’re an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone XS Max owner, you now have one thing that you can lord over anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch – you can play Fortnite at 60fps whereas they cannot.

The same actually goes for Android owners, too, because just like their Nintendo Switch-playing friends, their devices are currently incapable of playing Fortnite at anything beyond a capped 30fps. Apple’s latest iPhones, with the A12 Bionic chip at their core, now have an option to allow them to play at double that rate, making them run the game at the same frame rate as consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One.

Of course, the Nintendo Switch and iPhone XS Max are two very different devices, with very different asking prices. However, it’s another example of just how strong that A12 Bionic chip is, and a further example of the fact that Apple’s chip designs are leagues ahead of anything being built elsewhere. This is seen with the fact Android devices are also unable to push 60fps, even when those devices are current high-end flagships like the Google Pixel 3.

Fortnite maker Epic says that it is “continuing to work on Android optimizations that could allow [them] to support a 60Hz mode some time in the future” but there is no timescale on when that might happen.

For now, anyone wishing to get the best, most fluid mobile experience when playing Fortnite needs to have a very recent iPhone. Everyone else? You’re going to have to live with fewer frames being pushed, at least until Epic finds a way to wrangle Android and make it do its bidding.
