Former Apple SVP Scott Forstall has finally broken his silence to take part in a rare interview with journalist John Markoff to discuss the birth of the original iPhone launched back in 2007.
For those who have simply adopted iPhone and iOS in the last couple of years, the name Scott Forstall may not actually mean anything, but he will go down in the history books as the individual tasked with leading the original design efforts for what would become Apple’s mobile operating system.
Apple fans with an understanding of the company’s history will be well aware that Scott Forstall parted ways with the world’s richest company approximately five years ago. It’s fair to say that his decision to leave wasn’t exactly his own, with the outside populous getting the impression that the relationship between employee and employer took a nose dive in the final weeks and months. This interview is the first time that he has publicly spoken about Apple and iPhone since then so it’s actually a pretty big deal.
For those who may be expecting Forstall to dish the dirt on the company and announce some revelations about what it was like to work at Apple, there’s going to be an immediate disappointment. The interview focuses on a number of topics that have already been discussed previously, such as why Apple decided to take a stab at the smartphone industry rather than building the tablet that they initially had in mind.
Forstall also covers the creation of the original multi-touch display prototype which was ultimately embedded into 2007 iPhone in order to separate it from the competition at that time.
One of the takeaways from the interview is the fact that Forstall is actually a great public speaker who has an immediate ability to capture the attention of the audience. In addition to talking about iPhone, he also touches on overcoming serious illness with the help of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as well as Jobs’ dastardly plan to scam the Apple cafeteria.
Seriously, for anyone with an interest in Apple and its products, but more specifically how the company started the iPhone journey, this is definitely worth a watch to get the insights from one of the most important people on the executive team at that time.
