Flakey Report has Apple Launching An iPad Smart Keyboard With Scissor Switches

If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last few years, it’s that the type of switches used on keyboards really matters. Apple infamously struggled with its scissor keys on numerous MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air devices and it only seems to have fixed that by ditching the keyboard entirely. But according to one new – and flakey – report, we can expect it to make a return in an upcoming iPad Smart Keyboard.

Now it’s important to note that this report comes courtesy of DigiTimes, so there’s no saying whether this is actually going to come to pass or not. Given Apple’s inability to make a scissor keyboard work so far, we’re not sure. But the keyboards in its notebooks struggled with the ingress of debris, something that won’t be an issue for an enclosed Smart Keyboard.

Assuming the report is accurate this new Smart Keyboard will be used with next-generation iPad and iPad Pro models. But there’s no indication when that will happen. We’re expecting new iPad Pro tablets later this year, so it’s likely we would see a new keyboard at that time.

It would be a shame to see the Smart Keyboard change too much considering its popularity in its current state. Despite a general lack of longevity with regard to key labels rubbing off, users seem more than happy with the accessory as a whole.

Would that remain the case with a change in key switches?
