Fix Windows 10 Store App Downloads Issue With KB3081438 Official Patch

Microsoft has continued the development of Windows 10 by rolling out yet another cumulative update for the platform. the latest update, which carries identifier KB3081438, falls in line with Microsoft’s previous cumulative updates in that it doesn’t exactly provide a detailed explanation of what’s been added or fixed in the patch. Instead, Microsoft has chosen to go with the generic “this update includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10” change log notation. Thankfully, we now know a little more about it.

According to Mary Jo Foley, a Microsoft representative has confirmed to her that the latest cumulative update release is intended to fix an issue pertaining to the Windows 10 Store. Certain individuals from across the globe had been complaining of various Windows 10 Store issues that had been manifesting on their machines. Not actually being able to access the Windows Store at all was probably the most serious of the complaints, but in some cases certain users were also unable to download any apps or even get updates from already installed apps.

KB3081438 has been released as an attempt to immediately address all of those issues. Microsoft has so far refused to provide any additional narrative or elaborate on what was actually causing the issue, choosing instead to say that “Microsoft has nothing further to share”.

It is undeniably great news that the software giant has acted swiftly to rectify the issue with the Windows Store, but it’s actually rather bizarre that a number of users who were experiencing the issue, noticed that the problem seemed to fix itself without having this latest update installed.

To grab this update, simply navigate to Settings (Windows key + I) > Update & security > Windows Update, and you should see the update.

It’s as yet unknown if this latest release in the Windows 10 cycle contains anything additional beyond the scope of the Windows Store, but it has been confirmed that the update doesn’t reintroduce the issue for those whom it was mysteriously fixed for. Microsoft is also keen to point out that “Windows 10 updates are cumulative”, meaning that the latest update contains fixes provided by all of the updates that came before it. If you have any of the previous updates installed then Windows Update will only download the necessary components for the latest release, so you don’t have to worry about crowding your storage disk.
