As well as creating exciting new titles for gaming fans on smartphones and tablets to enjoy, developers and publishers are seeing more and more value in simply porting old classics through to mobile devices. Not only does a re-release / port press on the nostalgic buttons of those who previously enjoyed said title, but it also forges an all-new army of fans, and the news of Final Fantasy IV arriving soon on iOS and Android will do exactly that once more.
The Final Fantasy titles have been running for an age, and are well-known for there in-depth, immersive and challenging nature. Although mobile has garnered a reputation for being a vacuum for the causal gamer, releases from the Final Fantasy series are renowned for taking hours and hours of dedicated focus in order for progress to be made.
Creator Square Enix has today delivered the news of Final Fantasy IV’s iOS debut for December 20th, and an Android iteration will be arriving sometime in early 2013. iPhone and iPad users, generally speaking, seem to get first dibs on the vast majority of major releases these days (unless it’s an app from Google), but Final Fantasy fanatics will be hoping the delay is not to severe this time around.
Speaking of severity, the price is certainly no joke. It’s going to set you back a cool $17.99 – quite a large sum considering the usual price thresholds of games designed for iOS and Android. With that said, those adopting the title early will be able to take advantage of the launch discount, and considering it’s scheduled to drop less than a week before Christmas, let’s hope Square Enix are feeling festive.
From the looks of things, the iOS and Android version looks to be a near-identical rip of the Nintendo DS version, and as you can see from the screenshots below of the iOS port, it’s aesthetically sound.
We’ll let you know of the game’s release on both iOS and Android, as well as providing the usual download links and initial reaction.
