Facebook’s sprint to 1 billion users is well and truly underway, with the latest number of monthly active accounts being pegged at a massive 750 million by a ‘source close to the company’.
The figure comes via TechCrunch who apparently reached out to Facebook PR in an attempt to get confirmation from the social networking behemoth but, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the pair don’t exactly get along, Facebook declined to comment.
TechCrunch’s Jason Kincaid believes the reason we haven’t had any official word on user numbers from Facebook since the 500 million landmark is because they are waiting for that magic 1 billion figure before updating their statistics.
That isn’t surprising: the company hasn’t officially released an updated user count since it reached 500 million users nearly a year ago. Facebook has obviously been growing since then — we believe the company may be waiting until it hits the 1 billion mark before officially updating the stat again.
There was a rumor doing the rounds recently that Facebook had 600 million active users each month – a rumor that originated from Goldman Sachs, but it seems now even that massive figure has been surpassed.
This is yet more good news for Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with news also coming out that the infamous Winklevoss twins have finally ended their seven year court battle for compensation over Facebook – a social networking site that the pair claimed was their idea.
Olympic rowing twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have decided not to appeal to the Supreme Court a ruling upholding their $65 million settlement with Facebook Inc and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, signaling the possible end of the long-running dispute.
Not a bad day at all, Mr Zuckerberg.
