You may remember that back in March, Facebook announced that its Messenger platform would be opened up to afford third-party developers with the ability to build and deploy applications for use within the app. It seems that another milestone has been reached in the maturity of that platform with the availability of Doodle Draw, the first “true game” that has been made available for Messenger.
As part of the initial launch of the platform, Facebook only wanted to showcase third-party apps that allowed lntent to be created, such as GIF creation apps and limited offerings that serve up soundboard functionality. Of course, as you might expect with a relatively new platform, the bigger picture from Facebook’s perspective was always going to extend to attempting to provide richer, more engaging experiences that extend beyond the initial limited number of apps. Doodle Draw seems to be the beginning of that progression with its “Draw Something” type feature set.
The game, which is available for the iOS and Android platforms, is extremely easy to get to grips with, especially for those who have ever played or interacted with the OMGPOP created Draw Something or the old classic Pictionary board-game.
Doodle Draw essentially serves up a suggestion list of things to draw which can then be doodled onto the device using various colors. When you’re happy with the creation, it can then be distributed via Facebook to a chosen set of friends to allow them to guess what the drawing is. Gamers can earn points by playing and inviting more friends to join in the fun. Get ready for even more annoying Facebook game invites.
Once upon a time, Facebook used to rake in a significant amount of revenue through its 30% tax on gaming apps that were available through the desktop. Granted, that revenue has significantly decreased over the years, but the Messenger platform does seem to be potentially heading down a route that would allow the social network to once again take a slice of earnings from developers who make their content available from within the app.
For now though, Doodle Draw Game is available as the first true gaming experience within Messenger.
