The Facebook Messenger app for iOS has just been updated, bringing with it the much lauded iOS 8 share extension bound to make our experience richer and more convenient. Head on after the jump for further details on this development along with that important download link for the app itself.
Messenger is nowadays at the helm of our social connectivity, serving our instant messaging needs independent of the Facebook app. Interestingly, while the option to share content to Facebook from other apps has always been right up there with the likes of Twitter, Messages, Mail etc., Facebook’s standalone messaging app has never really made the cut, that is, until now.
The new update – which brings the app to version 22.0 – now allows users to share content from other apps on iOS 8 to Facebook Messenger via the share button. Users can share videos or photos from the Photos app, and even URLs from the Safari browser. All you have to do is hit the Facebook Messenger icon from the share menu and voila! The app had never really restricted you from sharing content as such before either, but it just removed a whole lot of steps of having to share content from within the Facebook Messenger app itself.
Android has long had a grip on this issue and offered direct sharing to Facebook Messenger with its share extension design. However, with the addition of Facebook Messenger gaining full support for share extensions in iOS 8, it’s safe to say that Apple is making sure that little details like these don’t go untouched, bringing apps in par to their cross-platform counterparts in terms of usability and features.
If you’re a Facebook Messenger user, then we highly recommend that you update to the latest version right now. Simply launch the App Store app on your home screen, and then tap on the Updates tab at the bottom. The fresh new version 22.0 update should be waiting to be downloaded right there.
If you do happen to give the app a whirl on your iOS device, then be sure to let us know what you feel about it.
