Facebook has long wanted to merge Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger chats into a single platform and now Instagram users are starting to receive notifications that the first phase of that is underway.
As multiple reports show, users in the United States are now receiving notifications that their Instagram messages are being merged with Facebook Messenger.
That means that chat will be cross-platform, with Instagram getting some features that were previously only available to those using Facebook Messenger including new emoji reactions and more.
As part of the change, users are noticing that the DM paper airplane logo in Instagram is being replaced by the Facebook Messenger logo.
This is surely only the start of the process that will ultimately see WhatsApp brought under the same umbrella, although that might be a problem in its current state. WhatsApp is tied to a person’s phone number and doesn’t currently support multiple devices being attached to a single account. We’d imagine that would be a problem for Facebook’s efforts here.
While the Facebook Messenger and Instagram merger is only happening to some users in the United States right now, it is surely only a matter of time before it starts to happen to people around the world.
