WhatsApp has opened up its multi-device support to everyone who wants to enable it. The feature, dubbed the “multi-device beta,” enables support for up to four companion devices.
While those four companion devices now don’t also need a phone to be signed into WhatsApp, there is still a catch or three.
First comes the fact that only one phone can be signed into WhatsApp at a time, meaning those companion devices are limited to web browsers, desktop machines, notebooks, and tablets. Still, it’s better than what we had before.
The multi-device beta is an opt-in program that gives you early access to try a new version of WhatsApp for Web, Desktop, and Portal. If you join the multi-device beta, you’ll be able to use linked companion devices without the need to keep your phone connected. Your personal messages, media, and calls are end-to-end encrypted.
WhatsApp does say that there are some things to keep in mind, however — including the single phone limit.
- You can use WhatsApp on up to four companion devices at one time, but can only have one phone connected to your WhatsApp account at one time.
- You’ll still need to register your WhatsApp account and link new devices with your phone.
- If you don’t use your phone for over 14 days, your linked devices will become disconnected.
Those looking to try all of this out for themselves can do that right now by following a few simple steps.
- Go to Settings within the WhatsApp app.
- Tap Linked Devices.
- Tap Multi-Device Beta.
- Tap Join Beta.
And that’s all there is to it!
