Amazingly, the battle between Apple and Epic Games has managed to find a way to escalate, with the App Store company revoking Epic’s developer account.
The impact of that will be felt as of August 28 when the change kicks in.
Epic Games has now filed a new lawsuit to try and get its development accounts back, and there are plenty of reasons for it to want to do exactly that. Not only does this impact Epic and its games, but also third-party developers who use its own tools.
“Apple’s actions will irreparably damage Epic’s reputation among Fortnite users and be catastrophic for the future of the separate Unreal Engine business,” Epic says in its latest lawsuit. Apple, for its part, seems to be happy to repair the damage it has done if Epic is also willing to stop breaking its developer guidelines – namely, remove its own payment system from Fortnite. It’s easy to forget that’s what started all of this off last week.
The removal of Epic’s developer account won’t just impact iPhone and iPad, though. Epic will no longer be able to notarize its Mac version of Fortnite and other apps, potentially making them unplayable or at the very least, appear to be.
Where this goes next isn’t clear, but it doesn’t look like either Apple or Epic intends to back down here. This might not be great news for Fortnite fans on any of Apple’s platforms – especially with a new season just around the corner!
