The war of words – and lawsuits – between Epic Games and Apple continues following the news yesterday that the Fortnite maker’s Apple developer account is being canned. Now, according to a new report by The Information, Epic is seeking out friendly companies who also have a dog in the App Store hunt.
Epic seems to be building a coalition of sorts, with Spotify one of the more outspoken critics of Apple’s App Store already on board.
We applaud Epic Games’ decision to take a stand against Apple and shed further light on Apple’s abuse of its dominant position. Apple’s unfair practices have disadvantaged competitors and deprived consumers for far too long. The stakes for consumers and app developers large and small couldn’t be higher and ensuring that the iOS platform operates competitively and fairly is an urgent task with far-reaching implications.
And while it’s unlikely that Epic will struggle to find companies who are sympathetic to its situation whether those same companies are willing to go head-to-head with Apple is another matter. Especially if they risk a similar fate to that of Epic.
It isn’t clear exactly what role a coalition would play, if Epic succeeds in forming one. Companies with concerns about Apple are already having informal discussions about their issues with other like-minded companies behind the scenes. One of the people aware of Epic’s discussions with other companies described it as an apparent effort to coordinate public messaging about Apple.
Epic and its coalition are concerned that Apple’s App Store acts as an anti-competitive force in the mobile world. Epic wants to be able to offer its own app store on iOS, with developers paying it, rather than Apple, to manage payments and whatnot.
Apple, obviously, feels rather different. There are no multiple lawsuits flying around with Google’s Play Store not exempt from the madness.
