Enable Torch Mode While Taking Photos On iPhone Using ‘PhotoTorch’

The iPhone 4 is considered by many as the biggest leap in the advancement since the Apple smartphone’s inception back in 2007. A completely overhauled, high-end design was accentuated further by the introduction of the Retina display, and belatedly perhaps, the camera was given an uber-bright LED flash. A complete win. Typically of Apple, the flash feature felt slightly unfinished, since while some apps allow the LED to operate in torch mode prior to the taking of a snap, Apple’s native Camera app does not offer this facility. Luckily, there’s a tweak for that, and it goes by the name of PhotoTorch.

Available for free over at the BigBoss repo, PhotoTorch is a very simple tweak which lets you keep the torch running when capturing an image. This is particularly useful when taking snaps in complete darkness or low lighting, since it offers a fairly accurate visual representation of what the image will look like thereafter.

If you were to leave the torch level “as is,” the resulting image wouldn’t be any different from using the native flash (aside from the obvious advantage of being able to preview your image after the effect of the LED). However, PhotoTorch allows you to readily adjust the level of light by means of a slider, meaning you can go all-out in the pitch darkness, and calm things down to a more subtle, understated torch level when you only require a moderate lighting boost.

Aside from that, there’s really not a lot else to this tweak all told, but it certainly fills in a small gap missed by Apple. As mentioned before, it can be downloaded by heading over to the BigBoss repository, which is a default in your Cydia source list unless you’ve opted to manually delete it.

Please note, PhotoTorch is only compatible with the following devices: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPod touch (fifth-generation only). In other words, devices which have an LED flash embedded in them.
