We’ve been covering all sorts of serious apps lately. Apps that create engaging new experiences (e.g. Paper Camera), solve a problem (e.g. Screen Filter) etc. Today, we wanted to cover something a little more light-hearted.
We will actually be talking about two apps. Both are based on essentially the same concept, but have a slightly different execution. Check them out after the jump!
Before talking about the apps themselves, let’s discuss the concept a little: smartphones today, especially Android smartphones, come with huge displays. You can make nice use of these huge displays for displaying information to people that you can’t talk to for because, say, you’re in a loud environment or in a library where you’re supposed to be silent.
Embiggen and LEDify are two apps that are built for this purpose. Both let you type words/sentences that you want to display on the screen. These strings are then displayed on your display. Embiggen displays them in a static manner on an easy-to-read black background whereas LEDify shows them in the form of a scrolling ticker that you would see in a place like Times Square, NY.
You can use both apps to do things like ask a faraway waiter to bring your bill, ask a lady if you can buy her a drink, tell a terrible driver on the road that he is a terrible driver, inform your friend who is presenting at a conference to place the mic a little far away from his mouth etc. etc.
Embiggen is available in two versions: a free one [Play Link] with all basic features and a $0.99 one [Play Link] with nifty extra features. LEDify, on the other hand, is completely free and without ads [Play Link].
We’ve tested both apps and can confirm that they work as claimed. If we had to choose one of them, we’d go with Embiggen since it is easier for people to read it.
