Tesla, SpaceX, and X CEO Elon Musk has reacted oddly to Apple’s announcement of a slew of new AI capabilities coming to the iPhone later this year, saying that he would ban the devices from his offices if the company integrates AI at the OS level.
Specifically, Musk says that it’s the integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology that causes him concern, saying that it is an “unacceptable security violation.”
Musk went on to say that not only would he ban employees from bringing Apple devices into the offices of his companies but that he would also require visitors to check their Apple devices at the door. What’s more, they’d be stored in a Faraday cage, such is Musk’s distrust for their ability to gather and then transmit data.
The stance is a particularly unexpected one considering the lengths at which Apple went to assure users that their data would be safe despite the arrival of Apple Intelligence.
Data is all stored on-device for the most part, while even the data that is handled off-device is done so via special Apple-designed servers running Apple-designed chips.
Musk’s real issue seems to be integration with ChatGPT, however, Apple will allow such integration with other chatbots further down the line. It remains to be seen if Musk’s concerns continue once an AI from one of his own companies can run on an iPhone in the same way.
